Starting your first year at Masaryk University and looking forward to living in the dorms? Then joining the Dormitory Council is a great opportunity for you to meet new people and make friends with fellow students across halls, years and faculties. Plus, you´ll gain confidence in communication, the ability to negotiate and resolve conflicts, or practice organizing student events.

Liaison between students and ACS

The Dormitory Council operates separately at each of the nine buildings operated by the Accommodation and Catering Services (ACS). It consists of a three-member group of students who live in a given dormitory and represent other residents. “Representatives of the dormitory councils meet with the ACS director regularly during the year. This may include information about dormitory repairs, restrictions and renovations, changes in dormitory fees or the operation of the canteens. At the same time, they assist the students themselves in dealing with practical matters. It is possible to contact them with suggestions for changes, complaints about the operation or when dealing with organisational issues,” says Head of Residence Management Renata Pavlicová.

The rights and duties of the members of dormitory councils are regulated by the Electoral and Rules of Procedure for Representations of Students Residing in MU Dormitories. “It’s great that students can influence what happens at their dormitories through the council. For example, if they have a new idea on how to improve the environment they share, they can contact the dormitory council. For us, it is an important feedback and a chance to become an extended hand of students in communicating with the management,” said Andrej Šimurka, who served as the chairman of the Klácelova Dormitory Council until last year.

Come on in!

There are many benefits to being more involved in the dorms. “Definitely don't be afraid and come on in! It´s a great life experience and a chance to learn how to interact with people and solve their problems. You will meet a lot of new faces, and you will also get a good feeling that you could be useful to others,” Šimurka says.

Elections for the dormitory councils are always announced by the ACS management within four weeks of the start of the new academic year. The announcement of the election date is published at least fourteen days before the election on the ACS website and on the notice boards in the respective dormitories.

The election of a new Dormitory Council shall always be organised by the existing Dormitory Council, by accepting nominations and ensure the implementation of the election. If no council was elected for the previous academic year, the elections are organised by ACS.
