MU dormitories: greater comfort for students and further planned renovations

Façade repairs, building insulation, window replacement, or the repair of riser pipes at the Vinařská dormitories, together with the completion of the two-year modernization of the Kounicova dormitories. These are the main investments of Masaryk University over the past year, implemented through the Accommodation and Catering Services (ACS MU), which continuously takes care of the maintenance of all nine of its dormitory complexes.

The most extensive reconstruction of the Kounicova dormitories to date was completed in the summer of 2025, and the first students moved into the modernized building even before the start of the academic year. As a result, the total capacity of MU dormitories increased by nearly 600 places to the current 4,034 beds.

Next year as well, Masaryk University will invest nearly CZK 50 million in essential repairs to dormitory buildings. At the Bří. Žůrků dormitories in Brno-Komárov, riser pipes will be replaced, and the same type of repair will be completed at the Vinařská dormitories (blocks A1 and A3). This technically and time-demanding reconstruction will require the dormitories to be closed from 1 June 2026, along with the necessary relocation of students from both blocks by 31 May.

Among larger projects, a complete reconstruction of the Sladkého dormitories in Brno-Komárov is expected in 2027–2028. The renovation will be carried out in several phases and is estimated to cost CZK 180 million in total.

New Student Housing on Campus

A long-term objective of Masaryk University is to concentrate student housing into a smaller number of complexes in order to reduce operating costs. Part of the planned development is the construction of dormitory and community rental housing in the University Campus Bohunice, with a capacity of up to approximately 1,500 beds. This housing will be intended primarily for students, but also for selected groups of university employees, especially early-career academics, researchers, or postdoctoral fellows.

The project responds to the long-term shortage of affordable housing, which has repeatedly proven to be one of the main barriers to studying and working in Brno. MU therefore plans to approach the housing concept in a modern way – as a community-oriented facility complemented by shared public spaces, including options to further expand services such as on-site dining in the campus area.
“The acquisition of the land represents a unique development opportunity that Masaryk University wants to make use of in cooperation with partners, so that the new dormitory infrastructure is well connected to public transport, cycling routes, and public spaces, and brings long-term added value to both the university and the city,” said MU Rector Martin Bareš.

In the medium term, the expansion of the existing Vinařská dormitory complex is also being considered. The plan envisions the construction of two to three new blocks in several phases, which would increase local capacity by 600 beds.
