Masaryk University has offered an increased capacity of 4,034 beds and more accommodation options for first-year students for this new academic year. Any applicant who applied for accommodation at MU dormitories this year and waited ultimately got their spot.
As a result Masaryk University does not currently acknowledge any excess demand in its dormitory buildings beyond its capacity. “The reservation lists expired on 31 August, while during August we still had over 300 unfulfilled requests. Every year, a few dozen beds become available at the beginning of the semester as some students cancel their reservations or fail to pay the deposit for various reasons. In the event that a bed becomes available, we contact the next applicants on the standby list immediately. Thanks to this, we managed to satisfy everyone this year,” explained Renata Pavlicová, Head of Accommodation Operations at the Accommodation and Catering Services.

The traditional summer tour of Masaryk University dormitories, regularly attended by the university leadership and a representative of the Student Chamber of the MU Academic Senate, highlighted the diversity of student housing this year.
While the newly renovated Kounicova dormitories now offer a standard comparable to those abroad, older dormitory buildings can offer community spirit and an almost family-like atmosphere.

For the new academic year, the management of the Accommodation and Catering Services has prepared the Nine Energy Savings campaign for students staying in dormitories, focused on saving electricity, water and heat. This is in response to a similar #MUNIsaves campaign launched by Masaryk University in October 2022. Using pictograms, the campaign encourages students to behave responsibly via the “nine rules” including gentle phone charging or efficient laundry. Savings and cost reductions should then be seen in four main areas – drinking water, heat, gas and electricity.

Masaryk University canteens are coming up with a new initiative to combat food waste. Every day in the last 20 minutes of the opening hours, MU students will be able to purchase selected meals at a discounted price. With this new measure, Masaryk University canteens are responding to suggestions from the last MU Catering Board meeting. All students will receive the discounted price for soups and meals that are always currently left to be issued from the daily lunch menu. The promotion does not apply to desserts, salads and fruit bowls.

Prohibition of electric bicycles and scooters
For students staying in the ACS dormitories, there is still a ban on bringing in bicycles and scooters using electric power. This is due to violations of fire risk and safety guidelines. ACS management is repeatedly reminded of this regulation during the regular mandatory inspection of fire and safety regulations by state authorities.
