REDUCING WASTE
On average, every Czech person throws away 57 kg of food a year. This means that for the whole of the Czech Republic it is then 600,000 tons of food waste per year. The most common reason to throw away food is to spoil it (especially vegetables and pastries). Another reason is that we cook, prepare or serve too much food. Due to these two reasons, people in the Czech Republic waste 355,000 tons of food a year.
Take away meals in your own boxes
Lightweight sealing boxes or two-piece BIO menu boxes are available for selling food outside the canteen premises. We prefer, however, to carry food in our own clean reusable containers.
In all canteens, we use 100 % recycable, pure paper cups for drinks.

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN PAPER CUPS
Since October 2022, it has been mandatory to label certain cups with the “turtle” symbol. However, there are exceptions among paper cups that do not require this marking.

First type: paper cup with PE coating (polyethylene coating)
As of October 2022, legislation came into effect that bans certain single-use plastic products and requires items containing plastic to be marked with the EU “turtle” logo.
This applies to paper cups with a PE coating, which must display this EU turtle symbol. Although these cups remain the most affordable option and can still be used (as long as they are properly marked), they do contain plastic.
Second type: paper cup with PLA coating (Polylactic Acid)
Polylactic acid (PLA) is a bioplastic made from plant starch and has similar properties to petroleum-based plastics. Although PLA is compostable, this process is only possible in industrial composting facilities at temperatures above 50°C. For this reason, cups with a PLA coating must also be labeled with the EU turtle logo.

Third type – 100% BIO compostable paper cup with a natural resin coating
These cups contain no plastic, no PLA, and no petroleum-based additives. They are one of the few types of cups featuring a compostable grease barrier, meaning they are fully liquid-resistant while remaining completely BIO. These cups do not need to be labeled with the EU turtle logo!
