Reservations: all applicants for dormitories were granted their spot
Masaryk University has offered an increased capacity of 4,034 beds and more accommodation options for first-year students for this new academic year. Any applicant who applied for accommodation at MU dormitories this year and waited ultimately got their spot.
As a result Masaryk University does not currently acknowledge any excess demand in its dormitory buildings beyond its capacity. “The reservation lists expired on 31 August, while during August we still had over 300 unfulfilled requests. Every year, a few dozen beds become available at the beginning of the semester as some students cancel their reservations or fail to pay the deposit for various reasons. In the event that a bed becomes available, we contact the next applicants on the standby list immediately. Thanks to this, we managed to satisfy everyone this year,” explained Renata Pavlicová, Head of Accommodation Operations at the Accommodation and Catering Services (ACS MU).
Current residents were among the first people to have the opportunity to book their bed for the upcoming year in May (1,628 students this year). Of these, everyone who expressed interest in living in the dormitories again was granted their spot. The next group were upperclassmen who had not lived in the halls of residence before but were continuing their studies and had newly expressed an interest in accommodation at the dorms (26 students this year). In the next round in July, 804 foreign students arriving under the Erasmus or Degree programmes were granted their accommodation.
Reservations opened in early August for incoming first-year students. “The number of beds for incoming freshmen depends on the number of reservations already made. This year the total capacity for this category was 1,576 beds, approximately 600 more than in the previous academic year. The increase for freshmen was made possible mainly by the completion of the two-year reconstruction the Kounicova dormitory,” Renata Pavlicová explained.
Situation as of 3 September 2025:
- Total student capacity – 4,034 beds (currently 100% full)
- Total number of upperclassmen – 1,654
- Total number of reservations of foreign students from Erasmus and Degree programmes – 804
- Total number of first-year students who have been granted their reservation – 1,576
(Compared to the previous academic year, the bed capacity for first year Czech and Slovak students increased by 31%)

Wall painting and utility pipes at Vinařská
ACS carries out upgrades and renovations at all nine dormitories throughout the year. Minor repairs and maintenance are typically scheduled for summer months. “This year during the summer break we managed to paint the walls at all dormitories at a total cost of CZK 4.381 million. Vinařská, Tvrdého and Sladkého dormitories were painted entirely; while those at Bří. Žůrků, Klácelova, náměstí Míru, Veveří and Mánesova the wall painting was limited to selected premises,” said Petra Jandásková, Head of the Technical and Information Technologies Division at ACS.
In the summer, the replacement of utility pipes started at block A1 of the Vinařská dormitory at a cost of almost CZK 20 million. “We will repair the vertical utility pipes in the entire student block. The same replacement of the piping will also be carried out at block A3 next year. The total investment will amount to CZK 40 million,” Jandásková explained, adding that the piping will also be partially replaced at block C. It is not used as student accommodation, but the renovation will mean significant improvements of energy efficiency for the entire building.
